Where are you in your life? Are you where you hoped you would be? Did you follow a plan to get where you are? If you have not reached your potential, have you identified the factors preventing you from reaching your goals? Why is it important for you and your family to grow and develop? How is your growth and development, or lack there of, going to impact your children? Most importantly, how can you improve yourself and reach your fullest potential?
I would assert that all of us could improve our station in life. I would also assert that everyone wants to improve, no matter what their present level of success is. What are the key barriers standing in your way for the life you want for yourself, and family? It is my experience – which has grown from humble beginnings to achieving academic success, extensive military experience and owning and operating a few businesses – that we are our often biggest obstacle to success. Our emotions often are the largest barrier to overcome. Emotions can be a wall that prevents from earning the life we want to live. Our emotions are complex, and they are usually reflected in our behavior. Therefore, even though they are a primary and complex obstacle, they aren’t the only variable we have to analyze and discuss.
If it were only so simple as one factor standing between us and our vision of success, it would be easy to identify this obstacle and propel ourselves forward. But for most of us, this is wishful thinking. Multiple variables can comprise our emotions, and stand between us and where we want to be.
I have spent years refining my emotions and pursuing success. This book is about sharing what I have learned so that others can benefit. One of the most important things I have learned is that there are trends to success all of us should be aware of. By understanding and adhering to these trends, you can position yourself to accomplish all that you seek.
No matter how you define success, one thing that will improve your probability of success is identifying the component tasks to achieving the goal. This involves identifying barriers in your path and applying a screen of logical thinking to the process of achieving your goals.
What is it I hope you achieve from the effort of reading this book:
Embracing a logical thinking model in order to approach life with the intent of improving your position.
Reprogramming our thinking to improve opportunities for success. Looking at complex issues in component parts that build success. Moving away from being governed by our emotions, and seeing the negative impacts of emotional decision-making.
Changing our perspective to see how past failures provide perspective for future success. Improving our ability to analyze trends. Sparking our desire to succeed through the analysis of all possible opportunities. Starting today to look at the time we have left and applying critical thinking skills to reach our fullest potential.
The beginning is always the most challenging part of any task. Life is full of difficult tasks. They can be mandatory, imposed, or voluntary. Whatever type of task you confront, the obstacles to completing them have to be addressed. Deferring challenges often lead to more effort the longer we wait.
Our emotional attitudes often lead us to defer the tasks in front of us. They can dominate our thoughts, leading us to take an emotional posture toward these tasks. As a result, it is often more productive to decrease our emotional perspective, replacing it with a logical perspective.
Emotional posturing can cause us to do strange things. It’s worthwhile to think for a moment about our base emotional states, such as fear, anger, jealousy, sadness, happiness, and denial. Feeling overwhelmed by just one of these emotions can undermine all of our efforts. If you’ve ever felt dominated by one or more of these emotions, you’re probably familiar with the feeling of falling short of your goals. It’s important ask yourself: what are your chances of success if you are influenced by your emotions?
The perspective I trust my readers will come to after reading this book is that emotional postures hinder our success. ~DrFrankLayman©
Narrative from "Manual of Professionalism and Leadership" by DrFrankLayman
What to Expect From Our "Manual of Professionalism and Leadership"
This manual is intended to be like a prescription to build the areas most in need of improving by advancing in the realm of Leadership and Professionalism.
The manual has pages intended for reflection. Reflect on previous shortcomings and how the tenants of the concepts provided could have changed the outcome, and perform the mental gymnastics of practicing your future responses to similar situations, to improve the opportunity for better outcomes. Some pages have blank lines to allow you to write out your goals, or express the outcome of your reflections. This manual is a living document meant to challenge your perceptions, grow and develop your awareness by expanding your insight into the transformational impact Professionalism and Leadership can have on your effectiveness.Striving to be better each day, setting up that expectation, but making it scalable allows people to advance in areas worthy of advancing. Being forgiving of yourself, should you deviate off the path, allows a paradigm shift in thinking and integration of these strategies, not as a chore to be done but a way of operating daily life. Just forgive yourself and fall forward deliberately, returning to the goals and mission of improving yourself and your world, rather than belittling or criticizing yourself and slipping further from the way.
The memory of a great person springs from the cascade of their actions. —DrFrankLayman©
Great leaders are remembered for the same reasons anyone is remembered – their actions were motivated by understanding and positive thinking and integrity. So whether or not you are a professional or hold a position of leadership, you can benefit from Leadership and Professionalism tenants. Growth and development should yield improvement that gains us more of what we seek in life. The well-developed mind is mature, not emotional, is rational seeking epiphanies, not apophenia (the human tendency to perceive meaningful patterns within random data). Its focus is for the purpose of growing in the positive and supporting others in a selfless way, not falling victim to following those of low intellect and emotional IQ. The obvious remedy is to take charge and become a better leader and act more professionally.
Understanding the importance of simple changes applied daily to generate a compounding effect resonates throughout all aspects of our life. The greater influence of training to be a better leader and more professional can expand your sphere of influence, touching and motivating others and bringing them closer to their best selves. True understanding of importance of dedicating yourself to the evolution of growth and development in Leadership and Professionalism is a primary step into advancing and moving forward to a better future. Ideas are powerful and they are sustained long after the owners perish, but they must lead to action or they are for naught. Ideas can crush greed and power; they are self-determining in overcoming and succeeding.Organizations that train soldiers, pilots, astronauts, law enforcement, etc… have a way of turning everything into resilience, training with every component fostering strategic thinking, adaptability, positive mindset, calmness under duress, and confidence under adversity.
All of us have these capabilities, but in our softer, modern lifestyle, few will avoid being tested on a regular basis to call upon them, grow, and advance in them. Iron and steel are forged in the fire and wisdom is developed through mindfulness. Then theory is not enough. Strategy unexecuted results is the sum of no change. Thought without action has impact to improve or advance. We have to think, behave, and act to get results. Those results won’t always be what was intended and may not be successful, so we have to learn from our misses to have contingencies, and land our future attempts. But without actions, there is never the opportunity to find out or the base to start from.
It takes courage to try. — DrFrankLayman©

"Manual of Professionalism and Leadership" Introduction by DrBobShackleford
The potential reach of your success in life and impact in your career is hugely determined by the extent of your leadership ability. Excelling in leadership can carry you to the top; lacking in leadership can inhibit and curb everything you touch.
Leadership, understood properly, is not a title, rank, or position. It is not defined by trophies, ribbons, and medals. It is not a corner office and a company car. It is not being the “boss” over vast numbers of operations, departments, and people. It is not knowing how to conduct an effective meeting, or build a comprehensive decision matrix.
Leadership is the ability to build relationships, gain respect, and earn trust to the extent that your very being, as well as things you do and say, encourages people to follow you and join in the work toward some worthwhile goal or purpose.
Leadership is not so much a set of managerial skills as it is the influence you exert by the very essence of who you are and how that impacts the people around you.
This book, "Manual of Professionalism and Leadership,” will challenge that essence of who you are as a leader, and it will help equip you to be a more complete, effective leader. It will help you not just “do leadership things” better, but to BE a better leader and THINK like a better leader.
Following this model of leadership can be transformative and life-altering. Read it through, soak it up, and live it out. Unleash the full potential of your leadership!
